Meteorite immediately excavated, but because its shape is so large (about 60 tons), so it never moved. Hoba meteorite is the largest meteorite ever found on Earth, most natural iron.
Hoba meteorite is thought to have landed less than 80,000 years ago. Strangely, this does not leave the meteorite crater.
It is speculated that the meteorite entered the Earth's atmosphere at a very shallow angle, slowed by atmospheric conditions around the point of falling to the surface at terminal velocity, so that the remaining intact and causing slight traces.
The meteorite, measuring 8 feet 9 inches. In 1920, a meteorite estimated weight 66 tons. Erosion, scientific sampling and vandalism has reduced the weight of meteorites over the years to 60 tons. Hacksaw marks can easily be identified in many places on the surface of the meteorite.
In an effort to control vandalism, Hoba meteorite declared a National Monument in 1955. However, the destruction of meteorites continue to occur until Rössing Foundation to fund restoration and preservation of overall meteorite in 1988.
In that year, the tourist center was opened at the meteorite site is located. For a small entrance fee, Hoba can be visited, touched and even climbed to spectacular photo shoot. Hoba meteorite is now visited by thousands of tourists every year.
